Visit to Age Concern
15th April 2008
In politics it is refreshing to get some good news, talk to some people who aren't upset about something. I like to get away from some of the negativity that dominates our public space. Not that there isn't plenty to complain about it is just nice to have a change.
I usually find these good times in the company of older people. On Saturday I attended the Age Concern 'Spring Fayre'. The event raised £1,300 for Stourbridge Age Concern and lifted the spirits of staff, volunteers and visitors alike.
Barbara Glover was there with some members of her art class. I bought some cards and a painting all of which were drawn by people learning in Barbara's class; they were of a very high standard and a real tribute to Barbara's excellent work and commitment.
I went round the coffee room and chatted to lots of people in their seventies, eighties and nineties. Nearly everyone was interested in what I was doing and keen to tell me how lucky they were. I was especially pleased to meet Edna Portess who has got five children. It was great to hear from Edna about how much these children, well I guess they are well into middle age now, do for their Mum.
