Margot James welcomes decision to save Broadfield House
13th October 2009
Margot James, Conservative Candidate for Stourbridge, welcomed the decision by Dudley Council to retain the world renowned glass collection at Broadfield House for the foreseeable future.
Margot congratulated campaigners whose work she has supported since she visited Broadfield House in January of this year. Margot has lobbied for one of two options:
- A state of the art, purpose built, museum that would improve the accessibility to our glass collection and would be a fitting tribute to our illustrious glass heritage and the world class collection that we have in the borough.
- Support for and maintenance of the glass collection at Broadfield House.
Margot said “In the current economic environment it would have been a real stretch to achieve the funding for the sort of establishment that we really need for our glass collection, that is not to say that we should not support campaigners in their efforts to raise such funding over the long term; but as of now the most realistic option that offers the best future for our glass collection, is to continue to house it at Broadfield House”.
Margot acknowledged that staff at Broadfield House have done a marvellous job promoting and displaying the glass collection over the years; and that recent months must have been extremely worrying and difficult for Mr Roger Dodsworth and his team. She said “I hope that improvements, such improved access for people with disabilities can now be put in place and that residents, visitors and staff alike can enjoy our world famous glass collection in the beautiful setting that is Broadfield House.
