"I attended the launch of the 'You need to know' campaign yesterday in Parliament. The campaign, run by the National Autistic Society, aims to get better understanding and treatment of children with Autism and related conditions like Aspergers. Too often child health services lack specialist knowledge in this area. It shocked me to hear that 70% of children with autism and related conditions suffer from mental health problems. Many of these mental health problems are entirely preventable with the right treatment and management.
"The Autistic Society is calling for Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) to ensure that practitioners have specialist knowledge of how to treat children with Autism and related conditions. All too often parents and children are told that no specialist services for children with autism are available in their area. As the young man with autism who addressed the meeting yesterday put it "you wouldn't go to hospital with a broken arm and get told that they don't mend broken bones in this area" but that is all too often what parents and children affected by this condition get told.
