Margot opens Stourbridge Carnival
5th July 2010
Margot James, MP for Stourbridge, opened the Stourbridge Carnival on Sunday 4th July and judged a number of contests as part of the festivites. The carnival, now in its 23rd year, was organised by David Harcourt.
Along with Bev Holder, chief reporter on the Stourbridge News, Margot judged the carnival princess. An especially difficult task as there were a record 42 entries in this year’s competition. She also judged the parade entry with Joan Oakley, widow of long-time carnival organiser Percy Oakley.
The event also featured many stalls along with live music, fun fair rides, a dog show, vintage vehicles, birds of prey, displays and demonstrations and even a performance by the Stourbridge Operatic Society.
The carnival attracted thousands of people to the town which gave a huge boost to the local economy. There were also many charities represented at the carnival that benefitted from the incredibly successful event.
Margot said:
"This was a great event in glorious weather. It is events such as the Stourbridge Carnival that help build strong communities and it was wonderful to see so many people out enjoying themselves.
"I found judging the competition very difficult as all the little girls were delightful. I hope that, even if they didn't win, they all had a wonderful time and a day to remember!"
